Beach Walks

Interested in learning more about sea turtles and how to protect these endangered species?  Join the Emerald Coast Convention & Visitors Bureau on a complimentary Nighttime Educational Beach Walk!

Sea turtles are vital to the Emerald Coast's ecosystem.  Visitors can learn how these species provide a cornerstone for everything that happens along the shoreline and emerald-green waters – and why protecting them is so important to Destin, Fort Walton Beach, Okaloosa Island.

The walk kicks off with a presentation by one of our local sea turtle experts, George Gray. He has been the area's sea turtle coordinator for over 20 years.  Part of his job includes scouting our beaches every morning to find new turtle nests. George says education plays a vital role in protecting nesting turtles.

Some of the things you will learn during this presentation include:

  • The different species of sea turtles found in our waters
  • How they nest on our beaches
  • How to decipher turtle tracks
  • The biggest threats to their populations
  • What you can do to help protect them during your stay

After the presentation, weather and turtle activity permitting, you’ll head down to the beach to look at nests, and observe some of the ways our community along the Emerald Coast protects sea turtles, like using special lighting at the hotels and resorts.

Kids of all ages will enjoy the adventure of how sea turtles crawl from the emerald-green waters to the shore and back and what impacts their seasonal migration and egg laying.

The educational walks are free and open to the public.  Tours are scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. from June through October.  The walks can accommodate a maximum of 20 people each evening, ages six and up. Times and locations are subject to change based upon weather and turtle nest availability.
